In my recent blog about Identifying the Stages of a Rite of Passage I offered some somatic tips for moving with and through a rite of passage. This is the final tip and it is an invitation to play with gestures in a way that they become a shape or “sculpture” which helps you to identify where you are now, and where your body/being may be trying to take you. This is great at any stage of a Rite of Passage/Change phase of life.
This is helping me as I move through the mini-rite of passage of the end of the school year/the beginning of summer transition in parenting a kiddo. At this time of year the dependable rhythm of the school year goes bananas, inviting in a lot of unknowns while I continue the mom dance of juggling loads of often competing priorities. It has felt good to take the time for myself before the last day of school to move with this exploration, draw with it, and write with it. I feel more in touch with myself as I head into this next season.
I invite you to try it out for whatever you are navigating during this Summer transition time.
Here is the recipe:
Move with arm gestures:
holding
pushing
pulling
guarding
protecting
inviting
giving
receiving
Find a shape of the body or a “sculpture” that feels like your now.
See where that sculpture wants to take you, what direction might it want to go? Could it lead you to a more resourced sculpture/shape?
Make a drawing of the two sculptures, or one sculpture that feels like the one you want to draw to in order to stay connected to it.
Title it: The one who is moving towards.
Write a poem or short story about this sculpture dance.
Please let me know if you try it out! I’d love to hear about your experience.
